Bleached branching coral (Acropora sp.) at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef. Author: J. Roff

Australia is currently serving as a benchmark for ocean acidification preparedness (ocean acidification literacy and area-based management), and dimensions which are wholly insufficient to best prepare ecosystems and societies for the impacts of ocean acidification (climate protection measures and policy coherence).

[...] The direct relationship between increasing carbon dioxide and the chemical changes to seawater place the attribution of ocean acidification to human activities beyond doubt. While current emission reduction commitments to the Paris Agreement signed in December 2015 are admirable, they fall short of achieving the goals set by the international community. Deep and immediate mitigation action is non-negotiable, but we need more.
